I think this person's server must be getting hammered; I requested this "mind map" (friend-clumping analysis, it appears) several days ago after seeing it in someone else's journal. I assume that bigger and whiter = more of a nexus among other people I list as friends, or something like that.

I find it amusing that Justin and his evil twin 3:-) have identical precedence! :D

Heh. I hadn't noticed that. :-)

Some of the placements seem odd to me. For example, sethcohen and estherchaya, who are married and have many of the same friends, are not near each other. And I'm not sure what small+proximate means; for example, steven is right next to me but in a small font.

Actually, if you go looking around the links, this is apparently one of the older and more mature memes around -- this is actually the second edition of the tool. It was hammered a bunch at first, but they've optimized it a lot to make it more practical.

Very intriguing, though. I've just ordered my own, and will be curious to see what it looks like. Thanks for the pointer...
Yes, version 2 seems to be doing much better at keeping the web server up, but generation still takes several days -- which tells me that there's a long queue.

The site provides information about how the generator works, but little about how to actually read the map. Are proximity and size/boldness reporting the same thing, or are they reporting different variables? And is this just a report of number of links among my frineds, or is that taken as a portion of overall number of links involving these people? Will someone whose friends list exactly duplicates mine be close, big, and bold? What if that person has 300 other friends? I haven't made the effort to slog through the detailed technical explanation; I wish they'd provided a paragraph on what the visualization itself means.

But still, it's a neat toy.
